In the healthcare sector, secure communication between professionals is of paramount importance, especially when dealing with sensitive patient data. Regrettably, private data is often exchanged over third-party platforms such as Whatsapp, which utilize servers that are externally owned, inaccessible and beyond the span of control. Although commonly practiced, exchange like this is often incompliant with the German Patient Data Protection Act (PDSG).
CONSIL!UM seeks to provide an alternative solution by combining the convenience of established communication platforms with the security of banking software.
Envision
In addition to mitigating security and regulatory compliance concerns, LEMOA medical sought to transform communication flows among healthcare professionals to boost efficient communication.
The two founders, Dr. Enise Lauterbach and Prof. Dr. Lauterbach, both physicians, knew that medical professionals exchange data and opinions, besides fax, either about common messaging platforms or old-fashioned postal mail.
As these options were found to be far from ideal, their aim was to develop a contemporary platform that allows proficient communication and was tailored to the specific needs of the medical sector, all while respecting security and compliance regulations.
Shape
After an elaborate brief on the initial challenges, jemmic delivered a white-labeled version of SecuChat to Dr. Lauterbach that was slightly modified to accomodate the specific needs of medical professionals. The mobile application called CONSIL!UM is available in regular App stores and facilitates the secured exchange of messages and content for its members.
The name is inspired by konsil or consilium (Latin: "consultation," "advice," "counsel") and refers to a group of advisors. For medical professionals, it is the patient-related consultation of physicians or psychotherapists by a corresponding specialist.
Access to the app requires a QR code generated by the administrator for the particular environment.
The preceding legitimating authentication enables the secure exchange of text messages, documents such as photos or video clips as well as live calls that can be recorded for documentation. The userbase and its extent is precisely manageable as well as each user’s individual permissions and rights within the app, which can be individually set up according to the respective job function.
Furthermore, the application and its data are hosted on privately owned and compliant Tier IV servers ensuring full control over data exchange. The solution allows the exchange of second opinions among colleagues with the convenience of commonly used messenger but without giving away control over data or risking data leaks.
Moreover, the platform facilitates networking and social interaction between healthcare professionals to gather and form groups of experts for collaborative work.
Deliver
Thanks to the partnership between LEMOA and jemmic, healthcare professionals in Germany now have access to a secure messenger that allows them to share sensitive patient data without risking security breaches. IT security regulation in healthcare is playing an increasingly important role. Privacy and security threats in healthcare are becoming more common. Medical organizations will be required to move to their digital communications to secure platforms as they have become popular targets for cyberattacks.
CONSIL!UM and jemmic are at the forefront of this revolution, providing doctors with a secure and reliable communication platform that prioritizes patient privacy and security.
